Sarah, the daughter of one of our members, spent countless hours making a wonderful quilt which was raffled to raise money for the Share & Care Group.  After picking the number for the lucky winner, the picture shows Sarah handing over a cheque for the £500 proceeds to Sophie, our coordinator.  Our grateful thanks to Sarah for all her efforts in raising this money.

Harvest Time at the Allotment

We were able to enjoy the fruits of our labour of this week's meeting of the allotment gardening group.  The weather has been much kinder to us this season with spells of warm sunshine interspersed with frequent rain showers, and a variety of vegetables was shared out between us including beetroot, carrots, sweetcorn, lettuce, runner beans and potatoes.

Visit to Kelmarsh Hall

Once again, the sun was shining when we were invited to visit Kelmarsh Hall.  We were greeted with fresh coffee and delicious home made cakes before being taken on a fascinating guided tour "below stairs".  It was then to a craft room where we decorated plant pots before filling with potting compost and sowing herb seeds.  The pots came home with us, and now reside on warm window ledges for germination.  This was followed by a picnic lunch in the sunshine, and a guided walk around the glorious gardens.  An altogether wonderful day, and our grateful thanks to the staff of Kelmarsh for making us so welcome.

Visit to the Husbands Bosworth Gliding Centre

We were invited to visit the Husbands Bosworth Gliding Centre during July where we were warmly welcomed by two volunteer instructors who gave us a fascinating talk on the history of the gliding club and a few of the aspects of gliding, plus a few anecdotes from their own experiences.  Following the talk we went to the cafe for coffee and cake, and an opportunity to try our hand at making our own paper gliders (with varying degrees of success).  We then went out onto the airfield before saying our goodbyes and returning home.  Many thanks to the volunteers at the gliding centre for an insight into this fascinating and exciting hobby.

Donation from the Lutterworth Rotary Club

Mark Thompson, President of the Lutterworth Rotary Club for the year 2018 - 2019 chose the Lutterworth Share and Care Group for his presidential charity during his year in office.  The photograph shows Mark presenting a cheque along with this year's president, Sally Hollis, to Prof. Jackie Parkes, founder and chairman of the Share and Care Group.  We are very grateful to the Lutterworth Rotary Club far all the support they have given us over the last few years.

Leicester Botanical Gardens

The Gardening Group took a week out from the allotment this week (2nd July) and visited the Leicester Botanical Gardens.  The weather was perfect, and an excellent (and enthusiastic) guide showed us round explaining some of the work carried out there.  Obviously, the visit was not complete until we had enjoyed an excellent lunch of sandwiches and homemade cake in the lovely old Edwardian house.  After lunch, we had an hour on our own to wander around and find parts of the garden we hadn’t seen on the tours including ponds, tropical greenhouses and specimen trees.

Lunch for the Gardening Group

Following our normal Tuesday morning at the allotments, the gardening group returned to the Lutterworth Methodist Church where a group of students from the Lutterworth College had prepared a delicious lunch of soup and bread, followed by a variety of pastries.  Everything, including the bread, had been made that morning by the students themselves who served us the food and then joined us to eat and have a chat. What a wonderful way for our members to spend there lunch time.  It was great to see the two generations chatting and interacting together.  Hopefully, this experience can be repeated in the not too distant future.

A 26 Mile Walk Raising Money for Share & Care

Rachel Grey of Ullesthorpe walked a total of 26 miles across the Peak District taking part in The Edale Skyline Challenge charity walk to raise money for Lutterworth Share and Care.  The picture shows her handing over a cheque for just over £400 to Sophie Styles, the group coordinator, looked on by Jackie Parkes, Chair and Founder of Share and Care, and members.  Our grateful thanks (and admiration) to Rachel for her efforts.
